As long as America has been in the throes of late-stage capitalism, debates about tipping have existed. Most decent people agree that employers underpaying employees and forcing them to rely on the generosity of strangers to tip fairly is a shitty situation, but one that workers shouldn’t have to bear the burden of.

One woman recently found out just how much people dislike people who don’t tip after tweeting a complaint about DoorDash’s prompt reminding customers to tip. The prompt reads, “Orders with no tip might take longer to get delivered — are you sure you want to continue?” The OP’s complaint read, “So basically DoorDash tryna force us to give TIPS?”

The problem here ultimately lies with DoorDash and the gig-economy model — drivers are severely underpaid and tips are essentially the only incentive provided to encourage them to “bid” on jobs that otherwise wouldn’t net them much cash.

Twitter users were quick to dunk on OP, with one popular leftist Twitter user tweeting, “not even putting a single dollar as a tip is actually insane,” following it up with, “like ur not even broke at that point ur just hateful .”

When someone then called him out for spreading government propaganda by endorsing tipping culture, he responded, “hey I want them to pay drivers fairly too but I can do that while also tipping because it shouldn’t be the drivers that get punished.”

These conversations always devolve into people defending an individual’s right to not have to tip, which some consider a punishment for some reason. Indeed, you have the right to do whatever you want, which is why nobody is advocating for tipping to be legally mandated; on the contrary, many people are instead advocating for things like a $15 minimum wage.

But it’s worth keeping in mind that while we’re all suffering under capitalism, not shafting your fellow workers by utilizing their services and taking advantage of the fact they’re paid very little is the bare minimum you can do. If you can’t manage that, consider picking up your own food — it won’t cost you a thing.
